Our Philosophy

At Small Steps, we believe that every child is a capable and confident learner. Our approach is inspired by the New Zealand Early Childhood Curriculum, Te Whāriki, and the Māori concept of Ako, which emphasises reciprocal learning between teachers and children. We focus on fostering curiosity, creativity, and social competence by tailoring our programs to each child's unique interests.

Our Team

Our dedicated team of educators, is passionate about early childhood development. With a blend of qualified, registered teachers and teachers in training, we ensure a high standard of care and education. Each teacher brings unique skills and expertise, creating a rich and diverse learning environment for our children.

Our Spaces

Small Steps cares for up to 35 children, and features two purpose-built spaces designed to meet the specific needs of different age groups:

Infants and Toddlers: A nurturing environment for children up to 3 years old, with a teacher-to-child ratio of 1:4.

Preschoolers: A stimulating space for children aged 3 to 5 years, with a teacher-to-child ratio of 1:6. Both areas are equipped with resources that encourage exploration and independent play.

Our Curriculum

Our emergent curriculum is flexible and responsive, allowing children to pursue their own ideas and develop their working theories. By observing and engaging with each child’s interests, we create personalised learning experiences that foster growth and development.

Community and Collaboration

We value the contributions of families and view them as essential partners in the learning process. Regular communication and collaboration with parents ensure that we can support each child effectively. We also strive to build strong connections with the local community, enriching our programs with culturally relevant experiences.

Settling In

We understand that starting at a new centre can be a big step for both children and parents. Our settling-in process is designed to make this transition as smooth as possible. We encourage parents to visit with their children before their first day to familiarise themselves with the environment and our routines.
